More ideas:
She wasn’t that unstable to begin with but what if the spirits (either Black or White- I always thought it was interesting that there wasn’t a lot of noticeable White Lodge influence in his life) pushed her over the edge to shooting him?
If it was White Lodge spirits then they might have been trying to kill him.
Black Lodge spirits would just want to slow him down/make him more vulnerable, like those times when he got sick as a kid.
